It is a very difficult book to rate with a number of stars so let s elaborate what I like and don t like about it I don t like the irrelevant mentions of books the author has read and movies he has watched They have at best a very superficial relevance to the story being told Maybe the author wanted to impress us how cultivated he is I would prefer if he had written his literary and cinematic comments in a separate essay They fail to add to the mood as well other than to emphasise the he is not really a business man but rather an author The point of views he expresses as being a victim of globalisation are the core of the narrative He is stuck in the idea that this could somehow have been prevented without ever in one sentence in the whole book sharing what that would have looked like The loss of the textile industry is no different from the loss of farmers to mechanisation of agriculture or of artisans to industrialization in previous generations Once again there are no parallels drawn with those major restructuring of society The apparent reason seems to be that although never stated they are attributed to advancement of Western civilization whereas these latest developments are due to the economic arms of Chinese dictatorship and Chinese immigrants that are happy to improve their own situation just a little bit without reuiring the same standard of living as the Italians He is all too happy to share details about their poor living conditions but did not make a single attempt to listen to their story Then again the title of the book says it all This is the narcissistic Story of My People Nonetheless I give it a 3 rating as it is always enriching to read opinions that are uite opposite to ones ownFor a view from a totally different perspective I recommend Factory Girls From Village to City in a Changing China I hope Edoardo Nesi will read it tooI read the original Italian version of the book Windburn globalization on Italy’s declining economy Starting from his family’s textile factory in Prato Tuscany Edoardo Nesi examines the recent shifts in Italy’s manufacturing industry Only one Light Traveling generation ago Prato was a t.
