Free download Shapely Ankle Preferrd review Shapely Ankle Preferrd ã PDF, eBook or Kindle ePUB free 730s papers carried regular ads in which income or respectability were the most desired ualities though some asked for a 'shapely ankle' or a 'non dancer' By 1900 twenty five British newspapers were dedicated solely to matrimonial ads Shapely Ankle Preferr'd tells the story of ads of all kinds from aristocrats and MPs bus conductors and nurses country suires and city swells and even from a man who had lost a leg 'due to the kick of an Ostrich in the East Indies' The reasons are strangely familiar the size of the city makes it hard to meet peo. The nature of this history changes throughout the book in the early period pre nineteenth century the author is mostly assessing the few existing lonely hearts ads from a literary perspective were they real were they satire what did they mean while past the nineteenth century in the twentieth there is so much material that she s basically just whizzing through it all The meat of the book as others have mentioned is the nineteenth century when lonely hearts ads whether real or fake whether inspired by the reading of too many Gothic novels or depicting actual Gothic situations seem to have flourished The writing is clear and fun and occasionally funny it s a very easy read However it s also clear that the author wasn t necessarily finding the source material that she d hoped for A lot of space is devoted to a murderer who found wife 2 through an ad and similarly to a married couple from the mid nineteenth century who met through an ad whose descendants were the only respondents to the author s attempts to find real life success stories from that era This is the problem the source material she had seems to consist almost entirely of the ads themselves and occasionally fictional literature which incorporated ads It isn t the author s fault but it makes it hard to draw any real conclusions from the book It might have helped if the author had looked at examples beyond Great Britain she makes brief reference to some but the focus of the book is pretty narrow A uick interesting read but probably not a re read
